Sometimes parents have to require their child to do one different activity, something that’s only once a week, maybe a 6 week series, nothing extra, like My broom broke so I became a mail carrier Us Postal Service shirt. They still love the one thing they are committed to, but it helps them learn energy can be channelled in other ways. She started gymnastics right after she turned 6 by taking a rec class. A coach saw something in my daughter and asked if she wanted to join the JO team. We agreed to let her try it. She was miserable and started to hate gymnastics after a year.

that’s great but assuming you went on to dance in a professional capacity it makes you relatively rare. I don’t think it’s healthy that so much dance for children is treated as if all or even most of them will want to do it professionally. my 3 kids are competitive dancers. I know what you mean. They miss things, but it’s usually not a big deal. They look forward compétition season. The ones we go to are like a huge party, where dancers from several dance school just dance and have fun.
My kids team is their second family, they have a very strong bond. They still have a life outside the studio, they have various interests. Where I live, dance is nothing compared to hockey. definitely teach balance. My daughter is 12 and we went the competition route. We switched studios this year. Best thing that ever happened. She still dances a lot but won’t compete this year.

She’s in middle school. Has school friends now not just dance friends. Went to a sleepover and My broom broke so I became a mail carrier Us Postal Service shirt party. She missed dance this week because she was sick and I didn’t need to call and explain why or write it down to count against her allowed dance absences. Balance. They need balance. I agree, my daughter goes to performing arts class on Saturday, they take turns in taking a teddy home for the week and taking pictures of what they did in that week and put them in the teddy book.
One little girl had a class (age 4) practically every day after school I just felt so sorry for her. My daughter had 2 pics in the book, cuddling in bed and her and teddy at a family party. At the height of my dancing (age 12-13), I danced six days a week, seven if it was Nutcracker season. Ballet was my main focus, but I also did jazz, character, and Irish. I did miss out on a lot, but I forged great friendships in ballet. I had to drop out at 15 because of depression (unrelated to dance), and I’ve missed it terribly ever since.
